I made my own embossing folder

I found an awesome tutorial on making your own embossing folders here on Pinterest. She had created this very same design, and being the Disney nut that I am I couldn't wait to recreate it. And it was easy!

I used a cereal box for my free chipboard. I used my Cricut and Design studio and George basic shapes and Disney Mickey font cartridge and Voila! a personalized embossing folder. Oh, the possibilities. My head is spinning with ideas.

If you attempt this (and I totally think you should) I learned a few things. My recycled cereal box chipboard did create some fluff that gathered around the blade inside the housing, so do take the housing out and push the blade down and give it a good huff to clear away anything gathering on it. My cereal boxes took 3 passes to cut very cleanly through. My settings on the machine were pressure at high, speed at high and my blade at 4 for the depth. I used my regular blade housing, not the deep cut. With 3 passes it cut perfectly.

If you want this .cut file, rather then redesigning it. It wasn't hard, but why spend the time if you can get it already done? I am happy to share. Leave a comment, with your email address and I will send it to you.

Find inspiration everywhere! Go... Create something fun & fabulous. Enjoy!

    1. Hi Heather, Yes, I put the card stock in between the chip board layers and ran it thru my cuttlebug just as I do with store bought folders. It uses the same "sandwich" as the store bought folders as well. Hope this helps. Let me know if there are any other questions. Thanks, Cathy- ScrappinCat!

  129. ok, so you cut the design out of 1 half of the cereal box and then some how the cut pieces are placed on the other cereal box half and then you sandwich you paper in between the 2 halves, correct? The part I am having trouble with is do you glue the mickey heads (or whatever you cut out) one by one?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Debra, Yes I did glue each mickey head down one by one, leaving the top piece in place as the guide it went quickly. I just added a little glue pen to each piece and set it down in the open design space in the top piece. I put some heavy books on top of it and let it dry over night. Then sandwich the paper between the two pieces and run it through your Cuttlebug or which ever machine you use. It works just like a store bought embossing folder.

Also, how did you adhere the little Mickeys in the same position as the design?

  150. Follow up: I was having some loading issues (for longer than I want to admit) and did not see your post about how you glued each Mickey silhouette into place. I can see the post now. So much work but also so much reward.
    Again, bravo!
